How Much Does it Cost to Build a Website?

How Much Does it Cost to Build a Website?  A good question… and not easy to answer.  I hate to say it, but the answer is, “It depends”.  Having a new website built can cost anything from zero, to many tens of thousands.

How Much Does it Cost to Build a Website?

If you listen to Wix, or Squarespace, or someone like that, they’ll tell you that your new website is FREE!  Sounds great!  But it only sounds great.

I’ve been dealing with one client for nearly 15 years and have built, I think, 5 (maybe 6) websites in that time, plus a lot of complementary promo material.  He recently called me as he had a ‘technical problem’.  It turned out he had decided to go with the FREE offer from Wix, but had made an absolute mess of it, and could not link his new domain name to the website.

It laster turned out that the site, in fact, was far from free, but the initial costs exceeded €300.  Now I’m no accountant, but I’m pretty certain ‘free’ doesn’t mean €300.

I ended up spending over 3 days fixing the problems, then asked about chargn for my time.  He wasn’t happy.  Still with Wix’s ‘free’ word in his head, he had an idea that my time was also free.  If you’re considering Wix, SquareSpace or any of the others, I wish you all the very best, I really do.  I only suggest you don’t fall for the hype.

Basic Website

I can build a fairly basic WordPress website, with up to 6 pages, for €850.00.  This would not include your domain name, which should cost around €10-€12 per year, or your hosting, at an annual cost of anywhere between €40 and €300+ per year.  That price would include full installation, time spent discussing design, aesthetics and function and server configuration (email addresses, databases, etc.).

That cost would not include content (text) creation.  It’s always best if the client writes content, then I edit it to be SEO-worthy.  This works extremely well with my current clients.

There is, however, a fairly good chance that this ‘basic’ site may not 100% fit your needs, and would need some customisation.  There’s no such thing as a ‘standard’ website, each one is different and depends on the company/business.

Some of the websites I have built contain all kinds of custom elements and prices can certainly jump up.  It all takes time… not to mention 30 years’ experience doing this job!

Many clients use third-party integrations, too.  Sometimes, very easy to implement, sometimes, quite the opposite.  Small details can make huge differences to the project.

E-Commerce Website

Prices jump of quite a lot with e-commerce websites.  For a small-to-medium online shop, I would be looking at between €2,500 and €4,000 minimum.  As with ‘basic’ websites, this price will depend on many factors, for example, how many products, what payment gateways are used, provision for ‘cross-sells’ and ‘up-sells’, temporary promotional features, plus, perhaps most of all, features NOT included with the WooCommerce vanilla install.  There are many, MANY of these, and  you may or may not want some, or all, of them!

There is no one price.  Every job is different.
